![]() Tempest 2000: Jeff “The Yak” Minter is one of the all-time great videogame design wizards, and this is his masterpiece, a brilliantly trippy update to the classic 1981 Atari arcade hit. And don’t forget the “SEGA Rock” soundtrack that parties like it’s 1989. The speed appears to be running at 60 frames-per-second, visuals are wonderfully crisp (especially on CRT) and there are nice touches like the billboard animations when you score. Worldwide Soccer: International Victory Goal: This arcade-style soccer videogame was among the Saturn’s launch library in May 1995, offering a highly impressive experience that combines pre-rendered players, polygon stadiums and VDP2 ground planes. Let’s take a look at some great videogames. ![]() All they knew is that Sega forgot to put in the “3D Chip” and that’s why Virtua Fighter didn’t look as pretty as Battle Arena Toshinden, and that Sony had that really cool dinosaur demo, and that Super Mario 64 could never be done on the 32-bit systems because, well, “64” is a bigger number than “32.” Like, duh. The kids had no idea how any of these machines worked. The gaming industry was entering its awkward teenage years and it was going to be a glorious, pimply mess. To that complexity, add a much steeper learning curve, greater emphasis on integrated software development tools, and the various challenges in using technology that was both cutting-edge and inadequate. This is especially true in Gen-5, as home videogame hardware designs became immensely complex and complicated, featuring multiple specialized processors and experimental designs that varied greatly from one platform to the next. They might as well be run by little animals who live inside the casing and make wisecracks like The Flintstones. One of the great unspoken truths is that the average person has no idea how computers work. The system was almost immediately dismissed as second-rate by consumers and the gaming press, and once that reputation had settled, it was impossible to shake. Now the second meaning is more profound: Nobody Knows What’s Inside the Box. This is especially true when it comes to SEGA Saturn, the Generation Five console cruelly smothered with a toxic reputation for poor performance and inferior technology compared to Sony and Nintendo. ![]() They are not interested in technology, but what that technology can do for them. They only care about playing great videogames. They don’t care about technical specs or hardware designs. People don’t buy computers and videogame hardware just to admire the box. First, Software is King, Queen and the Jack of Hearts. It is absolutely everything in this business, the alpha and omega, the beginning and world without end, amen. There are two meanings in that statement. I’m paraphrasing a little, but the quote went something like this: “A games console is nothing more than a box you need to play Mario.” That may be the greatest and most profound statement ever said about videogames. When writing these articles, I am constantly reminded of a famous phrase once spoken by Hiroshi Yamauchi, the former god-emperor of Nintendo. This episode will include many of the most popular games in the Saturn library – the ones that most gamers think of whenever they remember SEGA’s fifth-generation console – but will also showcase a number of third-party and import titles that you may have missed the first time around. Once again, we will be taking a look at a variety of titles that were released in North America, Europe and Japan that demonstrate the console’s under-appreciated powers. ![]() In my brief time I didn’t find any win buttons or sure-fire tactics, and the population limit makes victory through overwhelming force unachievable. Taking place over six centuries of the middle ages and featuring eight factions across Europe and Asia, you will build a base, an economy and an army then out-maneuver your opponent to achieve one of several victory conditions (though out-and-out annihilation remains the most straightforward and common method). What I bring to the table is fresh eyes, a love of history and a couple thousand hours devoted to the Total War series and its real time historic military battles without the burden of also building peons, or villagers, or SCVs.Īge of Empires 4 doesn’t work quite to that Total War scale, but it does a marvellous job at recreating the tactics and trade-offs of historic military conflict under the restrictions (and balance) of a tight population cap. My experience with the Age of Empires series begins and ends with the faint scent of Nutra-Grain on a promotional disc and wasting at least 40 cents in local calls for modem play with a friend who decided humiliating me was more fun that teaching me how to play the game, and the last RTS I played competitively had a – craft suffix with no number following. ![]() If you are looking for a deep analysis of Age of Empires 4’s chops as a competitive real time strategy (RTS) game or a comparison to its impressive lineage, you are in the wrong place my friend. You don’t want to spend years of your life praising Genghis Khan without the context of, you know, all the genocide, and you should know where I’m coming from before taking my opinion here as if it were preached from the pulpit of Westminster Abbey. Much like when analysing the great battles of history, context is important when devoting ten minutes of the precious little time you will spend on this mortal coil to reading a video game review. Indeed, I took the Arctic Pro boots out on a three-mile hike in the snow and sub-freezing temperatures, a two-mile hike through the rain, and even wore them around the yard to move some boulders and shovel river rock. The result? The Arctic Pros were comfortable on short and long treks alike. As I said in my review of the Mid-Heights, those 13-inch boots’ “rubber exterior banged against my shin in an awkward spot, bruising me lightly by the end of one four-mile hike.” The Arctic Pro boots, by comparison, ended in a more-natural spot on my leg and seemed to grip my calf better, which minimized the amount of banging and clanging. The Muck Boots Arctic Pro boots also didn’t hit my leg in an awkward spot. This made them feel much less cumbersome than their shorter cousins, and the reduced “wiggle” made my stride feel much more natural. But put them on, and the Mid-Heights have more girth in the ankle area than the Muck Boots Arctic Pro style does. This didn’t seem like a big deal at first, but the tighter fit of the Arctic Pro boots kept them snug against my feet throughout my outdoor adventures. In all honesty, they felt even less clunky than the Mid-Heights. Visually the two boot styles look identical except for the differing heights. Would these 17-inch industrial-grade boots seem clunky out in the field? But 17 inches isn’t small the company’s Mid-Heights are 13 inches, and other companies’ insulated boots (often of the hiking variety) are even shorter. The insulation goes up that entire height, which is obviously great for warmth. The Muck Boots Arctic Pro boots are 17 inches tall, which basically put them right below my knees. In fact, had my eyes been closed, I would never have even known my feet were outside the house.īut it wasn’t just my feet that stayed warm. Hood National Forest though, several times intentionally burying half my leg in snow just to see if the insulation would hold up. This combination is designed to keep your feet warm down to -60 Fahrenheit, though I thankfully never encountered temps that cold during my review period. I did take the boots out on multiple adventures in the Mt. The Muck Boots Arctic Pro boots are the company’s warmest footwear, with 8mm of Neoprene along the body, a fleece liner, and an extra 2mm of thermal foam in the foot area to keep out the cold. I was curious, though, whether the taller Arctic Pro would be just as comfortable. The company also provided all the footwear at this year’s Outdoor Retailer – Winter Market fashion show, and they have a deep line of men’s and women’s insulated boots for cold weather. The Muck Boots Arctic Pro boots, for instance, have been used by scientists in Antarctica, and I recently reviewed their shorter cousin, the Arctic Sport Mid-Height boots. But Muck Boots is more than just, well, mucky boots. ![]() Muck Boots has been a known commodity in my household for quite some time, as we first encountered them years ago at Bay Hay and Feed on Bainbridge Island. The traditional and most reliable way to connect your camera to a computer or another device is with a cable. Tethering your camera: essential equipment It’s a great way to improve the final product – but it can be slow, plus it involves extra software and moving parts, so if you need to do a fast-paced portrait session or an outdoors product shoot, it might be better to shoot the “normal” way. Ultimately, whether you tether is up to you. So while it might be tempting to tether for on-location shoots, consider carefully before hauling along your expensive electronics. You should also have a backup plan, just in case.įinally, tethering requires extra equipment, such as a lengthy cord and a laptop or desktop computer. It sometimes stops working for no apparent reason, so you’ll want to get set up and take some test shots before your photoshoot starts (so you have time to troubleshoot). You should always carry extra batteries and – if possible – shoot near a wall socket in case you need to plug in your laptop.Īnd tethering software is notoriously finicky. Tethering can also suck the battery life out of both your camera and your connected computer. Let them know how you work and do what you can to set a steady pace. You can check for perfect composition, focus, exposure, and subject blemishes – and your client can indicate what they like or dislike about each new file.ĭepending on the tethering software you use, you might be able to apply various presets to the image, so as to better visualize the final (edited) result. That way, you and your client can scrutinize your shots on a big screen. Tethering lets you quickly preview each photo on a large monitor within moments of firing the shutter button. Many tethering programs allow you to adjust camera settings from your computer, tablet, or smartphone – and you can fire the camera shutter from your device, too. If you’re tethering in a program like Lightroom, you can even make adjustments to your file for instance, you can boost contrast, convert the shot to black and white, and apply presets. Therefore, as soon as you press the camera shutter button, you can see your image displayed (in high resolution) on the computer screen.
